OpenFortiGUI 0.5.0 beta with GNOME-Keyring/KWallet integration

New beta release with new security feature.

You can now enable that your AES-keys are stored by your OS password manager (GNOME-Keyring, KWallet). This means your AES-keys are no longer stored unencrypted on your disk.

You can enable it via system preferences or setup wizard. This feature is optional.

Otherwise this version is safe to use. Only this new features is marked as beta.

Why i think its beta? While its working good in an KDE-Environment with KWallet, on Ubuntu or Gnome with GNOME-Keyring there is some strange behavior. For example on my test machine there are no tray menu entries shown after activating this feature.

Please test and report bugs or ways to solve them.

You can find the download and details on the project page.

OpenFortiGUI 0.3.3 with working remote VPN-DNS

New release with new features and fixes.

Version 0.3.3 brings working remote VPN-DNS and an option to define a realm.

Setting up DNS by remote Gateway was already a requested feature. This is working now. If you enable “Set DNS” in your VPN-Profile, any offered DNS-Servers by the VPN-Gateway are populated into your resolv.conf.

There is also an extra field now to enter your VPN-realm if required.

The core openfortivpn source was also updated now to latest upstream release.

More details can be found on the project-page. Have fun again.

OpenFortiGUI 0.3.0 with OTP-Auth

New release again and so another new feature. : )

Version 0.3.0 brings the most requested feature “OTP-Authentication”.

OpenFortiGUI implements this by scanning the output of openfortivpn for special “OTP-keywords” to detect an OTP-Auth request. Then it prompts the user for the OTP-Token and redirects it do openfortivpn.

The advantage of this method is that there is no modification of the original openfortivpn source required. It was successfully tested with a Fortigate 50E.

Please give it a try and leave feedback.

More details can be found on the project-page. Have fun.

OpenFortiGUI 0.2.14

I released a new version of OpenFortiGui.

Thats just another small update that includes:

  • Logs for each VPN-Profile, accessible trough GUI rightclick on profile
  • Verbose/Debug logging for each VPN-Profile, can be enabled in profile settings
  • Update openfortivpn to latest upstream version
  • Some bugfixes

More details can be found on the project-page. Have fun.

OpenFortiGUI 0.2.12

I released a new version of OpenFortiGui.

Thats just a smaller update that includes:

  • Start minimized, can be enabled in “Settings”
  • Traffic statistics
  • Some bugfixes

Important: Since version 0.2.12 the encoding of AES-encrypted passwords has changed because of a change of the upstream AES-library. You must reset all passwords for your VPN-profiles again to work, sorry for theĀ inconveniences.

More details can be found on the project-page. Have fun.

Introducing OpenFortiGUI

I am pleased to announce a new open-source GUI-VPN-client for connecting to Fortigate-Hardware.

First there was openfortivpn, an open-source VPN-client for Fortigate-Hardware. Its working really nice and stable and we used it for longer time. Then we was thinking about how to combine this nice software also with a nice and easy to use GUI.

This was the birth of OpenFortiGUI. It combines openfortivpn with a beautiful Qt5 GUI.

I wanted to wait until the software reaches a certain dregree of maturity. It tooks about 2 months of development to reach this state and I am proud to announce it here.

More details can be found on the project-page. Please give it a try and leave feedback. As this project is open-source and published on github, everyone can contribute.
